Why We Acquired Rekindle

hubspotrekindle

As you may have seen, HubSpot has acquired Rekindle, a Boston based technology startup with unique IP and innovations that we believe will help HubSpot and our customers advance. But how? Below I’ve taken the time to share some of my thoughts on why we made this specific acquisition and how we view acquisitions like these as part of our commitment to rapid growth and transforming the marketing and sales landscape.

1) Make the RIGHT connections.

HubSpot began on the belief that the way people shop and buy has fundamentally changed as a result of technology, and therefore, the way people are marketed and sold to must also change. Our inbound marketing methodology is designed around focusing on creating quality content that pulls people toward your company and product, where they naturally want to be.

As we’ve grown, we’ve expanded that same thinking into the world of sales as well. Just as inbound marketing is about being relevant rather than disruptive, inbound selling is very much about identifying the right prospects, at the right time so you can deliver a pitch that is helpful rather than annoying. Rekindle has developed a technology that taps into the contact graph to connect people with lost connections and friends of friends, as well as facilitate introductions between relevant business contacts.

It’s a concept that we’re excited about here at HubSpot and technology that we’re looking forward to incorporating into our existing sales products like Sidekick.

2) Always be growing.

HubSpot is committed to growth — growth of our business, our employees, our industry, and most importantly, our customers. So, as we think about the right companies to join our team, one of the key elements that we look for is a company’s’ commitment to solving for the needs of their customer and how that interaction will ultimately help those customers grow and expand their own businesses.

The technology that Rekindle has developed is designed to specifically help people expand their contact database in a valuable way. Based on the idea that the best way to meet people is through common friends, Rekindle’s founder Matthew Grace identified an opportunity to use technology in a new and simple way to facilitate first-time connections or rekindle old ones.

Rapid technical innovation balanced with a dedication to customer needs is at the core of what we best at HubSpot, and we were excited to find those same qualities in Rekindle. The ability to connect the right people at the right time and taking some of the guesswork out of the process aligns perfectly with how we’re thinking about inbound sales and marketing today.

3) Solve for Culture Fit.

We’ve worked hard over the years to develop a unique culture at HubSpot and it’s something that is incredibly important to us. In many ways, our Culture Code is our life’s blood and our north star as we make decisions across all facets of the business. So, just as culture is at the forefront of our minds as we hire individual employees, it’s also an important consideration as we think about acquiring companies. We look for companies that value the same things that we do — companies with people that can think quickly and innovate, people who are humble yet confident in their work, people who can get stuff done no matter what hurdles pop up along the way, and people who are passionate about the work that they do and the company and team that they are a part of. Rekindle’s team meets all that criteria and more. With the acquisition of Rekindle, we are honored to be gaining teammates who fit seamlessly into the existing fabric of the HubSpot team.

As we continue to advance and expand our team, our products, and our commitment to our customers, we will likely have more of these announcements to make in the future. We view acquisitions as important piece of our growth strategy and look forward to what the future has to hold.

10 Simple Web Copywriting Tips for Increasing Conversions

typewriter-6

Web copy is often the difference between visitors and leads, and leads and customers. It plays an integral role for consumers at every stage of the buying cycle, from awareness to decision making and advocacy.

Most marketers can identify poor web copy when they see it. Why? Because poor web copy doesn’t read smoothly, stir emotions, influence behaviors, or make explicit calls to action—it feels purposeless—and that’s just bad marketing. And yet, web copywriting is a strategy that sometimes falls by the wayside, overlooked for other site priorities like gated content, video, design, and functionality.

Perhaps you’ve spent a good deal of time and money on all that other jazz, but don’t rest on your laurels. If it’s time to step up your web copy game, the ten following tips will help you increase conversions on your website and ultimately close more business.

1) Be clear

“Clearness is secured by using words that are current and ordinary.” – Aristotle. If you wouldn’t use a phrase in a personal conversation with a customer, then don’t use it in your web copy. Clarity is the key to mutual understanding between you and your customers.

2) Be concise

Every single word used in your web copy should add value for the reader and act as a critical part of your argument or purpose. Cut out excessive language whenever possible and aim for an average sentence length of about 16 words.

3) Make it about them

As straightforward as this seems, many companies fail to reflect this principle in their web copy. Instead of saying “We do inbound marketing” try something like “Increase your web traffic and leads with irresistible content.”

4) Break up the page with subheads and bullets

A study from the Nielsen Norman Group found that 79% of readers skim, while only 16% read every word on a page. Breaking up your page with subheads and bullets will make it easier for those 79% to digest the copy—and ultimately take a desired action—on your website.

5) Avoid overuse of buzzwords

It’s one thing to ensure the inclusion of certain keywords you want to drive traffic for, but don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. Overuse of buzzwords and industry jargon clouds clarity and damages concision.

6) Don’t overlook microcopy

Microcopy is the text that doesn’t seem to come up in conversation very often. It may be the label on a form field, a tiny piece of instructional text, or even the words on a button. But it’s little details like these that can make or break the user experience on your website.

7) Craft a compelling call to action

Don’t betray your web copy by leaving its reader without a clue for what to do next. The call to action (CTA) is one of the most important aspects of web copywriting and, as such, it can be one of the most difficult to master. I recommend subscribing to the email list on WhichTestWon.com to receive regular emails about A/B-tested marketing campaigns (yes, CTAs are included).

8) Gauge the competition

Be aware of the web copy your direct competitors are using. How do they present their products and services to consumers? What features and benefit claims do they make? What CTAs do they use (and on which pages) to drive traffic through to the bottom of the funnel?

9) Know your audience

More specifically, know their pain points and address them in your web copy. Figure out why people buy your product or service, how they buy it, what they use it for, and what really matters to them.

10) Revise and optimize

Experiment with changing fonts, colors, and graphic placements within your web copy to learn how to most effectively drive people to your desired action. Revision and optimization should be a regular practice for your copywriters.

Web copywriting is a talent that few possess, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be taught. At DigitalRelevance, we understand the importance of using effective web copy to influence specific behaviors and increase conversion rates.

On Thursday, March 26 we will be hosting a free webinar titled “How to Become a World-Class Web Copywriter.” It’s the same presentation we use to train our very own web copywriters, so you know it’s good stuff. Click the link above or the image below to sign up today. Hope to see you there!

The 3 Pillars of Consumer Confidence

pillars of consumer confidence ecommerce

No matter what your ecommerce strategy involves, gaining consumer confidence is crucial to achieving success in 2015. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts: consumer confidence can only be earned through hard work, but it’s a whole heck of a lot easier when you use these three easy steps as your guide.

Honesty

The first step to gaining consumer confidence is by accurately representing your products. Yes, part of your job is to make your brands’ products look good, but there’s a world of difference between a beautiful presentation and a misrepresentation. Providing shoppers with accurate and detailed product information is the best way to give consumers a representation of what will arrive on their doorstep when they click “buy” - and you want their expectations to be well met.

The most successful brands don’t pursue one-time shoppers; they acquire loyal repeat-shoppers, otherwise known as the 8% of consumers who make 41% of online purchases .

The best way to gauge your accuracy and honesty is through your customers’ reviews. If a product is receiving consistently poor reviews, there’s a disconnect between consumers’ expectations and the physical product. No product is going to please everyone, but consistently bad reviews (as opposed to a small percentage) indicate one of the following: either your product isn’t being presented accurately or the price per value isn’t a good fit for your target demographic. In either case, this feedback from consumers is crucial.

Even if a product doesn’t live up to consumer expectations, there’s still an opportunity to establish trust through excellent customer service. Facilitate free returns for unsatisfied shoppers so they don’t feel duped. Publically responding to negative reviews is another good tactic: it requires only a small investment of time, but it will have a huge impact on unhappy shoppers and other potential consumers perusing product reviews.

Consistency

Once you’ve set the precedence of honesty with your customer, it’s crucial that you provide consistency. One great shopping experience can be obliterated by a negative one. It’s important to make sure you’re consistent in the following areas.

Product Information

There’s nothing more frustrating than inconsistent product information. It doesn’t matter if you’re a huge omnichannel retailer with multiple brick and mortar locations or an independent brand that’s sold through different online retail channels: all of your product information needs to remain consistent. It doesn’t take much to trip up a sale - it could be something as seemingly inconsequential as one retailer calling a bag “powder blue” while another names the same bag “sky blue” - anything that could potentially confuse your customers is a big no-no.

Branding

It doesn’t matter how hilarious or clever product copy is, if it’s not consistent with your branding for your company, it’s not going to have a positive impact. That’s not to say you shouldn’t imbue your brand with personality, but it’s crucial that your brand connects with your target audience. In other words, a joke that’s hilarious to a 19 to 35-year-old demographic probably won’t resonate with the 40 to 65-year-old demographic, and vice versa. Make sure that once you’ve picked your brand voice, you stick with it - it doesn’t mean you can’t evolve and expand to a new audience, but it has to feel organic. Ultimately, it’s more important to stay true to your core customer base than risk alienating them to attract a new one.

Customer Service

Retail battles are won and lost in the customer service department, and a big part of that is providing shoppers with whatever they need to be happy. Go above and beyond to consistently surprise and delight customers with your ability to handle their problems by doing things like offering online shoppers free return shipping so they feel comfortable purchasing new products.

Trust

Trust is the glue on a successful long-term relationship, whether it’s between romantic partners or a retailer and their customers, and it also happens to be the natural result of honesty and consistency.

Earning a consumer’s trust is the first step to creating a brand evangelist that will share their positive experiences with their friends and family. According to a recent study by Forbes, 81% of respondents indicated that their friends and family directly influence their purchase decisions. That’s an amazing asset to retailers who are able to win consumers’ trust.

The Takeaways

Consumer confidence is crucial to long-term growth and shortcuts aren’t an option. However, those retailers and brands that pursue honesty, accuracy, and consistency will see extraordinary long term results.
